Coronavirus: nearly 100,000 deaths worldwide, update on the pandemic

Health

The global toll from the Covid-19 coronavirus continues to rise. The situation in the United States is obviously the most worrying and has been for about two weeks. In France and other countries, containment appears to be having its first impact, but efforts will have to continue during the month of April.

The situation in France
On the evening of April 9, 2020, the balance sheet of the epidemic in France reported 118,781 confirmed cases for 12,228 deaths. Our country is in fourth place in the ranking of the most impacted countries. For the first time, the authorities observed a decrease in the number of patients in intensive care. However, no less than 30,000 people are currently hospitalized.

Containment in France started on March 17, 2020 and has already been extended once. So the latter was to continue until April 14, it seems that the containment will not stop. On April 13, President Emmanuel Macron will officially announce the news in an address. As Arnaud Fontanet, an epidemiologist at the Institut Pasteur, explains, confinement works. However, this month of April will be decisive and efforts should be continued with the same intensity. Suffice to say that the deconfinement is not yet ready to arrive.

New York confined until June
With more than 466,000 confirmed cases, the United States is more than ever in the lead. In fact, a quarter of the officially declared cases in the world are in this country. However, the United States still has slightly fewer deaths today than Italy. However, with around 17,000 deaths, first place is not far behind.

The United States has recorded 1,783 additional deaths in 24 hours and has had more than 1,000 deaths every day for the past week. In addition, New York State remains the main focus of the epidemic with more than 7,000 deaths. As for New York City, it is expected to be confined at least until June.

Some hope
In the United States, the situation has stabilized in hospitals in the most affected regions. In Italy, the toll is 143,626 cases for 18,279 deaths. However, the number of patients in intensive care decreases and the cures increase. In Spain, the balance is 157,022 cases for 15,843 deaths. The country has registered 605 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the lowest number since March 24. As for the United Kingdom, the situation remains alarming with 65,872 cases for almost 8,000 deaths.

The situation is worrying in Latin America, which has just passed 50,000 cases for more than 2,000 deaths. The most affected country is Brazil (18,176 cases / 957 deaths) and the country with the highest mortality rate is Ecuador (4,965 / 272). The global balance sheet shows more than 1.6 million confirmed cases with around 97,000 deaths.
